MARRIAGE RITE WITH MASS
For
Ramjay & Joedith

1:00 P. M., THURSDAY, JANUARY 4, 2017

SAINT THERESE PARISH, CEBU CITY

Entrance Song

The officiating priests and their ministers and altar boys go up to the Sanctuary, make the usual signs of respect to the Blessed Sacrament and to the Altar, and go to their usual places.

The Bridal Entourage stay at the entrance of the Church to prepare for the Bridal March.

When the Entrance Song is finished, the Main Celebrant starts the Mass with the usual ritual greeting. Afterwards he bids the people to sit down.

A Reader makes the introduction:

Where there is love there is beauty, strength, joy. Beauty that cannot be described, strength that cannot be broken, joy that cannot be surpassed. For where there is love, God is there.

Today we celebrate love. God is with us as we gather together to witness this special and blessed occasion. As the ultimate expression of their love for each other, and their love for God, Ramjay & Joedith will enter into a covenant, an agreement, a vow to love, serve and care for each other for the rest of their lives.

As privileged witnesses, let us all participate in this celebration and pray for Godís abundant blessings for this marriage and for all of us.

The Bridal Entourage starts to march with appropriate music that must not be "Here comes the Bride."

After everybody is in his or her place, every one stands.

Main Celebrant:

Let us remind ourselves that love must be part of our lives in whatever state God has placed us. We all know our weaknesses and acknowledge that we have not loved enough. Let us ask God for pardon and strength. After a short pause he continues: I confess...

All: To Almighty God, and to you my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do; and I ask Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Main Celebrant:

May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

All: Amen.

The Choir may sing the "Lord, have mercy," followed by the "Glory to God in the Highest."

Main Celebrant: Let us pray

Father,

you have made the bond of marriage a holy mystery,

a symbol of Christís love for his Church.

Hear our prayers for Ramjay & Joedith .

With faith in you and in each other they pledge their love today.

May their lives always bear witness to the reality of that love.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, forever and ever.

All: Amen.

All Sit

Reader:

A Reading from the Book of Genesis.

The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."

Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.

So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.

So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh.

Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man."

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

The Word of the Lord.

All. Thanks be to God.

Reader: Responsorial Psalm. Let our response be "Blessed are those who fear the Lord."

All: Blessed are those who fear the Lord.

Reader: Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways.

You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. Response.

All: Blessed are those who fear the Lord.

Reader: Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house;

your sons will be like olive shoots around your table.

Thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD.

Response.

All: Blessed are those who fear the Lord.

Reader: May the LORD bless you from Zion all the days of your life;

may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem,

and may you live to see your children's children.

Response.

All: Blessed are those who fear the Lord.

Reader: A Reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians.

Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord,

always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.

For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.

Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her

to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,

and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church--for we are members of his body.

"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh."

This is a profound mystery-- but I am talking about Christ and the church.

However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

The Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God.

BEFORE the Gospel Acclamation (the Alleluia) is sung, a Reader reads the following words.

Reader:

Light is a symbol of Christ. The candles that are lit signify the presence of the Risen Lord in the life of the soon to be married couple. May Christís radiance shine on them. May they discover in this light each otherís beauty. In times of darkness and doubt, may this light direct their steps to horizons of unlimited trust and understanding.

ASSIGNED PERSONS LIGHT THE CANDLES. After the lighting of the candles, the Gospel Acclamation is sung or recited.

The Gospel is read by one of the priest or deacon ministers, with the usual greetings.

Gospel: A reading from the Gospel according to John.

All: Glory to you, O Lord.

At that time Jesus said:

Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.

If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.

This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.

If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love.

I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

The Gospel of the Lord.

All: Praise to you, O Lord Jesus Christ.

Homily

After the homily (or exhortation) the spouses and the official bridal entourage stand, and the officiating priest addresses the couple with these or similar words:

Main Celebrant:

Dearly beloved Ramjay & Joedith , you are here today, to seal your love with an eternal bond before the Church. I assure you of the prayers of our community that God may pour his abundant blessings on your love and help you to carry out the duties of the married state.

The Main Celebrant addresses the community:

And you, dear brothers and sisters, may I ask you to help them with your prayers and accept them as a new couple in our Christian community.

Addressing the couple:

May I now ask you to answer truthfully the following questions.

Now the main celebrant questions them about their freedom of choice, faithfulness to each other, and the acceptance and upbringing of children:

Main Celebrant (to the bride):

Joedith, did you come here of your own free will to bind yourself forever in the love and service of your husband?

Bride: Yes, Father.

Main Celebrant: (to the bridegroom):

Ramjay, Did you come here of your own free will to bind yourself forever in the love and service of your wife?

Groom: Yes, Father.

Main Celebrant (to both):

Are you both ready to raise as good Christians the children whom God may give you?

Both: Yes, Father.

Main Celebrant (to couple):

Ramjay & Joedith, since you wish to contract holy matrimony, please join your right hands and express your intention before God and His Church.

They join their right hands.

First, the main celebrant asks the bride:

Joedith, do you take Ramjay here present, for your lawful husband according to the rite of our holy Mother, the Church?

Bride: Yes, I do.

Do you give yourself to him as his wife?

Bride: Yes, I do

Do you accept him as your lawful husband?

Bride: Yes, I do.

Then the main celebrant asks the bridegroom:

Ramjay, do you take Joedith here present, for your lawful wife according to the rite of our holy Mother, the Church?

Groom: Yes, I do.

Do you give yourself to her as her husband?

Groom: Yes, I do.

Do you accept her as your lawful wife?

Groom: Yes, I do.

Main Celebrant: Ramjay & Joedith, Now, please say together with (or after) me:

Grant us, O Lord / to be one heart and one soul /

from this day forward / for better, for worse /

for richer, for poorer / in sickness and in health

until death do us part.

Main Celebrant:

And I, by the authority of the Church, calling on all those present here as witnesses, confirm and bless the bond of the marriage which you have contracted. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

All: Amen.

Blessing of the Arrhae and Rings

The one assigned brings the plate with the arrhae and the rings.

Main Celebrant:

Ramjay & Joedith, we shall now bless your arrhae and rings.

Our help is in the name of the Lord.

All: He made heaven and earth.

Main Celebrant:

Let us pray.

Bless, O Lord, your servants Ramjay & Joedith with sufficiency of material possessions which these arrhae symbolize so that they may use them to attain eternal life. Through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

Main Celebrant:

Bless O Lord, these rings so that your servants Ramjay & Joedith

who wear them may ever live in mutual love and in unbroken loyalty. Through Christ Our Lord.

All: Amen.

Then the main celebrant sprinkles the arrhae and the rings with holy water.

The Main celebrant picks up the wedding rings from the tray and says:

Now give these rings to one another, and say after me:

The groom takes the brideís ring from the priest and puts it on the brideís ring finger. It is a very old custom in the Philippines to have the wedding rings of the groom and the bride on the ring finger of the right hand. The groom says after the priest:

Joedith, wear this ring / as a sign of my love and loyalty. /

In the name of the Father / and of the son / and of the Holy Spirit.

Then the bride takes the groomís ring from the priest and puts it on the groomís ring finger, saying after the priest:

Ramjay, wear this ring / as a sign of my love and loyalty. /

In the name of the Father / and of the Son / and of the Holy Spirit.

The groom takes now the arrhae in both hands; the bride places her cupped hands under those of the groom. The groom lets them fall into her hands, saying after the priest:

I give you these arrhae / as a pledge of my dedication /

to your welfare. / In the name of the Father /

and of the Son / and of the Holy Spirit.

The bride, accepting the arrhae, says after the priest:

And I accept them.

The bride places the arrhae on the tray held by the one assigned.

The general intercessions (prayer of the faithful) follow. The priest says:

Main Celebrant:

Dearly beloved, let us now pray for the Church and for our newly wedded couple whose marriage reflects their union with Christ. Let our response be: Lord, hear our prayer.

Reader: For the holy Church spread over the world, for its leaders and for the rulers of our nation, let us pray to the Lord.

All: Lord, hear our prayer.

Reader: For the poor and the sick and all those in trial and affliction, let us pray to the Lord.

All: Lord, hear our prayer.

Reader: For Ramjay & Joedith, that God may keep their hearts united forever, let us pray to the Lord.

All: Lord, hear our prayer.

Reader: That He may protect them from evil, lighten their burdens and fortify them in their trials, let us pray to the Lord.

All: Lord, hear our prayer.

Reader: That He may stir up the grace of the Sacrament in all the married couples here present, let us pray to the Lord.

All: Lord, hear our prayer.

Main Celebrant:

Almighty, eternal God, look down with favor upon your servants. Grant them to remain faithful to you and to one another. At the end of a long and well-spent life, reward them with eternal happiness together with (their children and with) all those who love them. Through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

The Mass continues as usual.

Prayer over the Gifts:

Lord,

accept our offering

for this newly-married couple, Ramjay & Joedith.

By your love and providence you have brought them together;

now bless them all the days of their married life.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

THE LAYING ON OF THE VEIL AND THE CORD IS DONE AFTER THE SINGING OF THE SANCTUS, according to the following instructions. There is a pause in the celebration while an assigned Reader reads the following:

Reader:

The veil on the head of the bride and on the shoulder of the groom symbolizes that the woman comes under the protection of the man signifying the order that God created and referred to in the letter to the Ephesians. Thus the husband will be responsible for the direction of their life and their family. The wife, in turn, will lovingly submit to and support her husband in all their endeavors.

The cord symbolizes the bond of commitment that the couple have for each other. This commitment founded on the love of God will bring them joy and happiness and will make them victorious over the trials of life.

The assigned persons put on the veil and the cord. The Mass continues as usual. After the Our Father the Nuptial Blessing is said over the couple.

Main Celebrant:

My dear friends, let us turn to the Lord and pray

that he will bless with his grace this woman Joedith

now married in Christ to this man Ramjay

and that (through the sacrament of the body and blood of Christ)

he will unite in love the couple he has joined in this holy bond.

All pray silence for a short while. the Main Celebrant extends his hands and continues:

Father,

by your power you have made everything out of nothing.

In the beginning you created the universe

and made mankind in your own likeness.

You gave man the constant help of woman

so that man and woman should no longer be two, but one flesh,

and you teach us that what you have united may never be divided.

g,

by your plan man and woman are united,

and married life has been established

as the one blessing that was not given up by original sin

or washed away in the flood.

Look with love upon this woman, your daughter,

now joined to her husband in marriage.

She asks your blessing.

Give her the grace of love and peace.

May she always follow the example of the holy women

whose praises are sung in the scriptures.

May her husband put his trust in her

and recognize that she is his equal

and the heir with him to the life of grace.

May he always honor her and love her

as Christ loves his bride, the Church.

Father,

keep them always true to your commandments.

Keep them faithful in marriage

and let them be living examples of Christian life.

Give them the strength which comes from The Gospel

so that they may be witnesses of Christ to others.

Bless them with children

and help them to be good parents.

May they live to see their childrenís children.

And, after a happy old age,

grant them fullness of life with the saints

in the kingdom of heaven.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

The Mass continues as usual.

Prayer after Communion:

Lord,

in your love

you have given us this Eucharist

to unite us with one another and with you.

As you have made Ramjay & Joedith

one in this sacrament of marriage

and in the sharing of the one bread and the one cup,

so now make them one in love for each other.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

SOLEMN BLESSING:

God the eternal Father keep you in love with each other,

so that the peace of Christ may stay with you

and be in your home forever and ever.

All: Amen.

May your children bless you,

your friends console you

and all people live in peace with you forever and ever.

All: Amen.

May you always bear witness to the love of God in this world

so that the afflicted and the needy

will find in you generous friends

and welcome you into the joys of heaven forever and ever.

All: Amen.

May Almighty God bless you,

the Father, + and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit. +

All: Amen.
